Seated Amida, the Buddha of the Western Paradise at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich

Seated Amida, the Buddha of the Western Paradise at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwichmyminifactory.com
Amida, the Buddha of Infinite Light, is one of the most popularly worshipped deities in the Far East. According to sacred scripture, Amida created a paradise, known as the Pure Land (Jo do), where the souls of sentient beings could strive toward enlightenment without the pain and suffering associated with life on earth. In Japan, the worship of Amida became widespread during the Fujiwara period (894-1185), and high ranking aristocrats constructed temple buildings and commissioned paintings that represented Amida's glorious paradise.

Head of a Buddha at The Guimet Museum, Paris

Head of a Buddha at The Guimet Museum, Parismyminifactory.com
This head of a Buddha had been identified as being made of iron and labelled as belonging to the Ming dynasty (1368-1644 AD), merely because most other cast iron sculptures of this type had also been dated to the Ming dynasty. The head is now installed in the centre of the new Tsui Gallery and it is secure in a glass case. The head has been displayed at some height from the ground to give an impression of its original height. When first made, it would have been part of a colossal figure of Buddha standing some six metres tall and, sadly, now we can only imagine how splendid the whole sculpture looked when it was completely painted and gilded.

Fragment of Buddha Dainichi Nyorai at The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts

Fragment of Buddha Dainichi Nyorai at The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Artsmyminifactory.com
Buddha Dainichi Nyorai, The Cosmic Buddha, is the central deity of Esoteric Buddhism. As opposed to the "revealed teaching", understandable to the intellect of the common man, the "concealed teaching" (mikkyō) of Esoteric Buddhism offers Buddhahood and paradise on earth to the initiate, through ritual practice and the contemplation of sacred images. According to Kūkai, the founder of the Shingon school of Esoteric Buddhism in the early ninth century, "because the secret storehouse [Mikkyō teaching] is so profound and mysterious it is difficult to manifest with brush and ink [text]. Thus it is revealed to the unenlightened by adopting the form of images. The great variety of postures and mudrās are the effect of Buddha's great compassion. With a single glance [at the images] one becomes a Buddha."

Budai at The Royal Ontario Museum, Ontario

Budai at The Royal Ontario Museum, Ontariomyminifactory.com
Budai or Pu-Tai, or 布袋 (Hotei) in Japanese, Bố Đại in Vietnamese, is a Chinese folkloric deity. His name means "Cloth Sack," and comes from the bag that he is conventionally depicted as carrying. He is usually identified with or seen as an incarnation of Maitreya, the future Buddha, so much so that the Budai image is one of the main forms in which Maitreya is depicted in East Asia. He is almost always shown smiling or laughing, hence his nickname in Chinese, the Laughing Buddha In the West, the image of Budai is often mistaken for Gautama Buddha.

Buddha Protected by the Naga at The Guimet Museum, Paris

Buddha Protected by the Naga at The Guimet Museum, Parismyminifactory.com
This sculpture is the head of a Buddha sitting in meditation (samadhi) on the naga Mucilinda represents, according to one interpretation, an episode in the life of Sakyamuni. This one, lost in meditation, was to be swallowed up by the waters of a lake Mucilinda inhabiting these waters, then protected him by deploying multiple heads that appear here overlooking the figure. Sitting on the coiled body of the snake, the Buddha seems to be inducted. Inherited by his hieratic style of the tenth centuryas well as its abundant adornment, this statue is typical of the style of Angkor Wat. The wide face in a square it presents an artificial morphology and stylized patterned mask is crossed by the line of continuous and sharp brows. This representation of Buddha protected by the naga is an archetypal image Cambodia, appearing -in the current state of connaissances- at the beginning of the tenth century it will then be very popular in the Angkorian statues. This representation is becoming particularly important in Cambodia, where the naga is linked to the origins of the Khmer kingdom.
